A Workshop for Pre-Teens and Teens
Driver’s Ed for the Digital World
You would never hand your child the keys to a car without training.
The same is true for navigating the digital world.
Smartphones and other digital tools can be powerful sources of connection and information. What young people need, though, is a clear understanding of the manipulation built into social media and gaming—the psychology and power of persuasive design. When they understand how these systems work, they can use technology to enhance their lives rather than letting it shape and control their lives.
Preteens and teens want to understand what’s happening behind the screen. They don’t want to be manipulated.
This three-part workshop respects their intelligence and curiosity. Using real-life scenarios and guided discussions, students will develop their own strategies, analyze their habits, and learn to use technology as a tool, rather than letting it use them.
Following each session, parents will receive an email with:
- A recap of topics covered
- Discussion prompts to continue these conversations as a family
What Your Child (and Family) Will Gain
For Preteens & Teens
- Understand what’s really happening behind their screens: learn how social media and games are designed to influence behavior and attention.
- Strengthen critical thinking: analyze their own habits and make choices that align with who they want to be, not what algorithms push them toward.
- Identify stress and overwhelm: understand the pressures of being “always available” and develop healthier boundaries.
- Boost confidence online: gain tools for handling group chats, notifications, online identities, and social expectations.
- Develop digital discernment: learn how to slow down, think critically, and evaluate online content before believing or acting on it.
- Feel respected and heard: explore real-life scenarios in a space that treats them as smart, capable thinkers.
For Parents
- Shared Language: Build a common understanding with your teen about how to approach technology at home.
- Continued Conversations: Use the provided discussion prompts and recaps to keep the learning alive after each session.
- Peace of Mind: Feel confident knowing your teen is developing tools to stay thoughtful and grounded in a digital world.

What Participants Will Learn:
We don’t just teach kids what to avoid, we teach them how to think like research scientists about their own online behavior. They’ll learn to:
✅ Identify how persuasive design works on their brains
(attention, impulse control, dopamine loops)
✅ Recognize when they’re being nudged or manipulated by algorithms
✅ Evaluate what they see online: spotting misinformation, hidden bias, and credibility gaps
✅ Communicate more consciously online, understanding how digital spaces shape the way we talk and connect
✅ Check their own habits: noticing signs of compulsive scrolling or gaming before it becomes a problem
✅ Develop strategies to align their use of technology with the lives they want to live
Equip your child to use technology wisely—instead of being used by it.
